| The Vedanta Society of Kansas City An Overview |
|||||||||||||||
| In 1947 Gladys Miller and Ula Bergfeldt joined the burgeoning Vedanta movement in America when they invited Swami Satprakashananda, a monk of the Ramakrishna Order of India, to teach and counsel spiritual seekers in Kansas City. The Swami founded the Vedanta Society of Kansas City and continued to visit and guide its members for the next thirty years. During the fifties, regular evening classes included guided meditations and talks on the Upanishads. In 1967 Sunday services were added. Swami Chetanananda succeeded Swami Satprakashananda as minister of the Vedanta Society of St. Louis, and since 1980 he has been making regular visits to Kansas City to give classes and talks. In 1985 the Society moved to its current location, 8701 Ward Parkway. Over the past sixty years, the Vedanta Society of Kansas City has hosted many notable guest speakers and distinguished monastics. To celebrate its 60th Anniversary, in addition to the ministry of our beloved Swami Chetanananda, five very popular swamis will visit again: Swami Tyagananada is minister of the Ramakrishna Vedanta Society, Boston, Massachusetts. Swami Atmarupananda is resident at the Ramakrishna Monastery, Trabuco Canyon, California. Swami Sridharananda is head of the Vedanta Centre of Sydney, Australia. Swami Sarvadevananda is assistant minister of the Vedanta Society of Southern California. Swami Shantarupananda is head of the Vedanta Society of Portland, Oregon. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet these dedicated spiritual teachers.
